Kakuro for Seniors

Puzzles

Kakuro is a number puzzle on ElderWit.com, made for older adults with large print and big buttons. The classic cross sums puzzle, a crossword made of numbers. Fill the white squares with 1 to 9 so every run of squares adds up to the total in its dark square, with no number used twice in a run.

How to play Kakuro

  1. Tap Play now. Kakuro opens right here in your web browser.
  2. Choose a level: Easy, Medium or Harder.
  3. Each dark square shows a total. The number above the line is for the white squares to its right; the number below the line is for the white squares under it.
  4. Tap a white square, then tap a number from 1 to 9 at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Every run of white squares must add up to its total, and a number may not repeat in a run.
  6. The words under the grid tell you the totals for the square you picked, and point out when only one set of numbers can fit.
  7. Repeats and wrong totals turn red, so you can fix them right away. Tap Clear to empty a square.
  8. Take your time. There is no clock and no rush.
  9. When you finish, try the same level again or move up a level.

Three levels

Why people enjoy it

Kakuro mixes the fun of a crossword with a little adding. Short runs give a quick start: a total of 3 in two squares can only be 1 and 2. Each square you are sure of opens up the next. It is a gentle way to practice sums and careful thinking, one square at a time.

Similar games to try

Players who like Kakuro often go on to Cross Number. A small crossword where every answer is a number. Solve the clues and fill the squares. Cage Sums is another good pick. Fill the grid so each row and column has each number once. The numbers in each outlined cage add up to its small total. Number Straights is worth a try too. A number grid with dark squares. Each row and column uses a number only once, and every run of white squares holds numbers that follow on, in any order.
