How to play Hus

  1. Tap Play now. Hus opens right here in your web browser.
  2. Choose a level: Easy, Medium or Harder.
  3. The two rows nearest you are yours. The two far rows belong to the computer. Every cup starts with 2 seeds.
  4. Tap one of your green cups, a cup with 2 or more seeds. The seeds are dropped one at a time into the next cups, going round your own two rows.
  5. If the last seed lands in a cup that already had seeds, you pick them all up and carry on sowing.
  6. Land on a full cup in your front row, facing a computer cup with seeds, and you capture both computer cups in that column. The captured seeds are sown from the cup where your turn began.
  7. A player with no cup of 2 or more seeds loses the game. Win two games to win the match.
  8. Take your time. There is no clock and no rush.
  9. When you finish, try the same level again or move up a level.

Why people enjoy it

Hus belongs to the big family of seed sowing games played across Africa for centuries, and its long chains of sowing make every turn a surprise. One move can sweep around the board and capture a pile of seeds. The counts are shown in large numbers, so you can plan without counting by hand.

Similar games to try

Players who like Hus often go on to Mancala. Scoop the seeds from one of your cups and drop them one by one around the board. Fill your store on the right. Oware is another good pick. A seed game played in Ghana and across the Caribbean. Pick up the seeds from one of your cups and sow them one by one around the board. If your last seed makes two or three in a cup across the board, you take them. Toguz Korgool is worth a try too. A long sowing game with nine pits on each side. Make an even number on the other side to capture, or make exactly three to claim a special pit for the rest of the game.

Questions

Is Hus easy to learn?

Yes. Start on Easy: A smaller board with six cups to a row. The computer often plays any cup. When that feels comfortable, move up. On Harder: The computer also thinks about your reply.

Can I make the words bigger in Hus?

Yes. The print is large to start with, and Settings lets you make it larger still. It works on a phone, tablet or computer.
