People who love words tend to love them for life. The crossword gets done in pen, the letter tiles come out after dinner, and there is always one person in the family who knows what "quixotic" means. A good word game rewards exactly what years of reading and talking have built up: a big vocabulary and a feel for how words fit together.
The trouble is often practical. Newspaper print is small, the tiles are fiddly, and not every puzzle book is kind to tired eyes. The word games on ElderWit.com are set in large, clear letters with big buttons, and each one has three levels. Here are fifteen worth trying, starting with the most familiar.
Word Search is the easiest way in. A grid of letters hides a list of words; tap the first letter of a word, then the last. On Easy there are 4 words and they only run across. Harder hides 8 words that run across, down and on a slant. There are also themed versions, such as Garden Word Search and Kitchen Word Search, if you like a puzzle with a topic.
Crossword Lite is a small crossword with plain clues, the kind you can finish over one cup of tea. Easy has 3 short words and shows you the letters you need. Harder has 7 words. If you enjoy it, the site also has full size large print crosswords on the crossword page.
The letters are mixed up and you put them back in order. Word Scramble starts with short words and shows you the first letter, then moves on to five letter words and longer ones.
Guess the Word is the old pencil and paper guessing game with a kinder twist: instead of a drawing that ends badly, a flower grows as you go. Easy gives you three short words with the first letter shown.
Change one letter at a time to climb from one word to another, so that COLD becomes WARM in a handful of steps. Word Ladder begins with two short ladders and builds up to three longer ones. It is the game on this list most likely to keep you thinking after you put the tablet down.
In Codeword every square in a small crossword shows a number, and the same number always stands for the same letter. Work out one letter and the rest start to fall into place. Easy gives you two crossing words and a short list of letters to choose from.
Secret Word is a guessing game with colored hints. Type a word, check it, and the colors tell you which letters are in the right place. Easy uses four letter words, gives you a clue and allows 8 tries.
Groups of Four lays out a set of words and asks you to sort them into groups of four that belong together. On Easy there are two groups and the group names are shown. On Harder there are four groups and the names stay hidden, which is where the real fun is.
Each row is a kind of thing and each column is a first letter. In Category Grid you put every word in its square, so a fruit starting with P goes where those two meet. It is short, tidy and very satisfying to finish.
"A stitch in time saves..." Finish the Saying gives you a well known saying with a word missing and a few words to pick from. It is a lovely game to play with someone else in the room, because every saying starts a conversation about who used to say it.
Pick the word that rhymes. Rhyme Time is quick and light, a good warm up before something harder.
Answer each clue with two words that rhyme, such as "sad dad" for an unhappy father. Hink Pink has you pick one word from each side. It looks simple and is cleverer than it seems.
In Word Chain each word must start with the last letter of the word before. Easy is a chain of 4 with two choices at each step; Harder is a chain of 8 with four.
Add a Letter builds a word tower: each word adds one letter to the word above, so A becomes AT, then HAT, then THAT. Easy is a short tower of three words.
A word runs down the page, and for each of its letters you pick a line that starts with that letter and fits the theme. Acrostic feels a little like writing a short poem, and it is the most relaxing game on this list.
If you do the newspaper crossword, start with Codeword or Crossword Lite. If you prefer letters to clues, start with Word Search or Word Scramble. If you want something to play with a visitor, choose Finish the Saying and read each one out loud. Whatever you choose, play it on Easy first. Easy is short, and it shows you how the game works before it asks much of you.
Word games are all about seeing letters clearly, so it is worth a minute in Settings to choose the text size that suits you. Many games also have a Read aloud button that speaks the instructions. On a phone, hold it upright for word lists and sideways for wide grids. If a puzzle is not going well, Start over gives you a fresh one; nothing is lost and nobody keeps count.
